Studies have shown that up to 30% of all immunohistochemical tests are sub-optimal for interpretation which can impact patient diagnosis and, subsequently, treatment. This lecture will highlight common problems that can occur during pre-analytical, analytic, and post-analytic stages of testing. Specific topics including fixation, microtomy, antigen-retrieval, primary antibody selection, and use of appropriate controls will be discussed.
