In this workshop participants will discover ways to achieve high-quality, consistently stained slides for diagnoses through the optimization of their Hematoxylin and Eosin processes. Leveraging advanced digital imaging technologies, she will demonstrate practical methods to achieve variation in staining intensities, utilizing visual stain. Get ready for a fast-paced workshop filled with information on how to recognize sub-optimal histology slides, troubleshoot the cause and develop a solution to the issue. The first half will focus on the hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) stain: how to obtain a consistently optimal stain, how to recognize when something goes amiss and how to remedy the situation. The second half will zoom in on selected special stains which have reputations for yielding inconsistent results. Participants should be able to take this knowledge back to their own laboratories to assist them in their everyday histology work.

Clifford Chapman, MS, HTL, QIHC
Clifford M Chapman has been working in the field of histology for over 45 years. His work in clinical and research pathology has resulted in having authored/coauthored over 25 scientific publications, including two books. As a member and presenter of the National Society for Histotechnology and the Massachusetts Society for Histotechnology, Mr. Chapman has lectured at their annual meetings for over 35 years and received the NSH Leica Leadership Excellence in Teaching Award in 2019. Over his career, Mr. Chapman has directed laboratories at Tufts New England Medical Center, Massachusetts General Hospital, Children's Hospital Boston and Pathology Services. He currently is the owner of Medi-Sci Consultants.

This workshop will focus on the key morphological features of the basic tissues and their subtypes.
Every tissue and organ has unique distinguishing features that allow you to differentiate between them. However the blue and pink colors of hematoxylin and eosin stained specimens are particularly problematic creating many histology "look-alikes". This workshop will focus on the key morphological features of the basic tissues and their subtypes. Hints on how to distinguish histology "look-alikes" will be included. Plane of section and resolution will also be discussed in interpreting sections.

There are commonly used histochemical staining techniques performed in the routine Histology laboratory on a daily basis. This presentation will be a basic review of these stains and the staining mechanisms. We will identify the stains and discuss the reagents. We will address some trouble shooting basics and also some of the clinical indicators for the ordering of these stains. The stains discussed in this presentation will be: connective tissue stains, microorganism stains, carbohydrate stains and exogenous/endogenous pigment stains. This will be a nice review if one is preparing for the certification exam. There will be much information discussed.
